Thickness & edges

The edge is the part of a worktop you see and touch most often. Choose it alongside the material, cabinet proportions and practical details of the installation.

Separate slab thickness from edge appearance

Ask whether the proposed visible edge is the slab itself or a fabricated build-up. Those are different specifications even if they produce a similar visual depth. Ask us for a section drawing or physical example so the construction is clear.

Confirm the named product is available in the proposed thickness and finish. Do not assume every colour or surface can be supplied with every edge option. A shortlist based on a finished sample is more useful than a profile name alone.

Look closely at exposed corners

Discuss the corners people will pass and the edges around the sink and seating area. Ask which details we recommend for the specific material and intended use. For shaped profiles, view the complete detail rather than a tiny section.

Cosentino’s Dekton care guidance notes the role of rounded edges in reducing chipping. Treat that as product-specific guidance, and ask us for the appropriate detail for whichever surface you select.

Coordinate with the rest of the kitchen

The finished worktop height and underside relate to drawers, appliances, upstands and wall finishes. In a replacement project, ask what will change if the new surface has a different finished depth. Check that the sink and tap arrangement is compatible with the specification.

For an island, consider the relationship between edge appearance, seating and supports together. A visually slim surface still needs the correct support design. See the island planning page for the questions to settle.

Record exactly what you approve

Ask the quotation to identify thickness, profile and which edges are finished. Mark corners, exposed ends and any built-up sections on the drawing. Add a reference to the approved sample if a profile name could be interpreted differently.

Compare alternatives using the same complete layout. The cost guide explains why fabrication details belong in the price comparison. Final suitability and dimensions are confirmed at templating.

Product care references

Manufacturer guidance checked September 2026. These references do not imply a supply partnership; the selected product’s current instructions apply.

Questions people ask

Is a thicker worktop always the better option?

Choose the specification for the material, layout and required performance. Thickness alone does not establish suitability or quality.

Can I choose a curved edge?

Ask what profiles and curves can be produced in the selected product. Agree the shape, finish and cost before approving fabrication.
