Use the same questions for every surface
Shortlist two or three actual products rather than trying to rank entire material families. Bring cupboard and flooring samples into the comparison. Ask what the finished edge looks like, how the pattern reads across a large piece and what maintenance the manufacturer requires.
| Material | Design starting point | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz | Coordinated colour and patterned designs | How does this finish behave in daily use? |
| Granite | The character of the actual natural slab | Which slab, treatment and joint layout are proposed? |
| Porcelain | A crisp surface and carefully specified edge | What does the edge reveal and how will it be fabricated? |
| Marble | Individual natural veining and finish | What marks and maintenance should I expect from this stone? |
Appearance: look beyond the small sample
A sample helps you compare tone and texture, but a full slab or large-format image helps you understand pattern. For natural stone, ask to approve the actual slab. For any directional design, review how adjoining pieces and vertical panels will meet.
Ask to see the edge as well as the top. Consider whether a quiet surface or a strong pattern suits the rest of the room. There is no need to choose the most striking piece if it competes with other details you want to enjoy.
Care: ask for the written routine
Get the instructions for each shortlisted product and compare them side by side. Ask about everyday cleaning, hot cookware, spills, sharp objects and any treatment or sealing requirements. Product-specific advice is more useful than a broad “hard-wearing” claim.
As one example, Caesarstone recommends chopping boards and heat protection for its quartz surfaces. Do not transfer care instructions from one brand or material to another. Our care guide explains what to retain at handover.
Layout and budget: compare complete solutions
Ask us to check whether each shortlisted surface suits your planned sink, island, supports and access route. Compare the same finished design, including joints, edges and splashbacks. If a supplier proposes a change for one material, ask them to explain it.
Then compare the full installed scope using the cost guide. Visit the material pages for the next questions to ask. Suitability and availability are confirmed when we assess the job.
Product care references
Manufacturer guidance checked September 2026. These references do not imply a supply partnership; the selected product’s current instructions apply.
